In 1871, Horace Fairbanks opened to the town of St. Johnsbury an elegant Athenaeum, to house its library, offer space for readings and gatherings, and house and exhibit a significant collection of paintings. The upper floor is Athenaeum Hall.
Greg Sanford, state archivist, says he has no Athenaeum lecture materials -- because his mandate is to collect only statewide items.
