In 1871, Horace Fairbanks opened to the town of St. Johnsbury an elegant Athenaeum, to house its library, offer space for readings and gatherings, and house and exhibit a significant collection of paintings. The upper floor is Athenaeum Hall.
A dropped ceiling, installed for energy conservation and "because it was the fashion," hid the painted ceiling of Athenaeum Hall for decades in the 20th century. Here it is today; wish we had a photo of it from 1872!
