Note on Mark Twain
So far, all the lists I've found of Twain's touring indicate he spent time in Brattleboro and in Bennington, but no further north in Vermont. BK

In 1871, Horace Fairbanks opened to the town of St. Johnsbury an elegant Athenaeum, to house its library, offer space for readings and gatherings, and house and exhibit a significant collection of paintings. The upper floor is Athenaeum Hall.
